Live Review: Northlane – Knitting Factory (Spokane, WA)

ByAaron Borg

June 25, 2024 ,

When I stepped into the Knitting Factory on June 23rd, 2024, it felt like walking into a modern metalcore show that I know and love now in my 30’s, but with a few nods to the “emo” music I grew up with. It was nice to feel right at home despite not knowing every lyric of every band’s discography like I usually do when I shoot a show. Northlane, Windwaker, Thornhill, and Invent Animate each brought their own unique flavor and I think the four groups truly made for a well rounded night. Some shows aren’t always that way, and you have “that one band” that doesn’t quite fit the picture. Not the case here.

Windwaker  is an Australian metalcore band known for their “true to the genre” sound. Formed in Melbourne, Victoria, the band consists of members Will King (vocals), Jesse Crofts (guitar), Joel Tyrrell (guitar), Indey Salvestro (bass), and Chris Lalic (drums). Since their formation, Windwaker has gained a loyal following in the Australian and international metal scene. They have released several singles and EPs, including their debut EP “Fade” in 2017 and subsequent singles like “New Infinite” and “The Sitch.” Its always awesome to see an opening band throw down hard and keep energy up for the rest of the artists to follow. WIll did a great job coming out into the audience for people to engage with, and all in all, 10/10 would see again. Check out “Sirens”, its that one song you’ve probably heard about “girls on white horses, and mysterious forces”. I know I recognized it right out of the gate when they played it.

Northlane is an Australian metalcore band known for their innovative blend of heavy riffs, atmospheric soundscapes, and thought-provoking lyrics. Formed in 2009 in Sydney, New South Wales, the band currently consists of members Marcus Bridge (vocals), Jon Deiley (guitar), Josh Smith (guitar), Nic Pettersen (drums), and Brendon Padjasek (bass). Northlane’s music combines elements of progressive metal, djent, and electronic influences, creating a distinctive sound that sets them apart in the metalcore genre. Their songs are characterized by intricate guitar work, powerful rhythms, and balance of Marcus Bridge’s aggressive screams and melodic clean singing. Since their debut, Northlane has released several acclaimed albums and EPs, including “Discoveries” (2011), “Singularity” (2013), “Node” (2015), “Mesmer” (2017), and “Alien” (2019). Northlane is one of those groups that you can listen to and seriously appreciate the work that has gone into their albums, and then hear them live, and somehow be even more blown away at their talent. Its not often that you can hear vocals in particular that outshine records in a live venue, and in particular one that is packed completely full of people, indoors. As someone who’s been playing and watching live music my whole life, and seen 200+ artists, it’s a pretty uncommon privilege to witness. This tour departs North America at the end of July, coming to many major Canadian, and Midwest / East Coast cities before wrapping up. Catch it while you can!
