Poolside At The Flamingo’s latest EP, Accabadora, is a thrilling ride that perfectly captures the band’s unique blend of deathcore and grindcore. Released on May 22, 2024, through Blood Blast Distribution, this EP is a testament to the band’s growth and their relentless commitment to pushing the boundaries of extreme music.
Poolside At The Flamingo is made up of four talented musicians who each bring something unique to the table:
Scotty Bohnen on vocals, whose growls and screams add an intense layer to the music.
Danny Bohnen on guitar, delivering intricate riffs and heavy breakdowns.
Rudy Garcia on drums, providing the relentless blast beats and dynamic rhythms.
David French on bass, adding depth and power to the band’s sound.
The EP kicks off with the title track, “Accabadora,” and let me tell you, it pulls no punches. The moment the blast beats and growls hit, I was hooked. The distorted guitars add a chaotic energy that’s hard to resist. Just when I thought I had the song figured out, it slowed down to a bone-crushing breakdown. This unpredictability is what makes Poolside at the Flamingo so unique and exciting to listen to.
Next up is “The Deceiver,” and it doesn’t let up on the intensity. The brutal riffs and aggressive vocals perfectly capture the theme of betrayal. I was also pleasantly surprised by the music video, which features the band members’ kids. It adds a charming, personal touch that contrasts nicely with the song’s heavy sound.
“Seething” is a rollercoaster ride. It starts with relentless energy, then dips into a groovy, sludgy section that had me nodding along. But just when I thought I could settle in, the song picks up again with sharp guitar riffs and powerful drumming. It’s a testament to the band’s ability to blend different subgenres of extreme metal into one cohesive and engaging track.
The EP closes with “Hell on Earth,” which begins with chaotic drumming and growls that live up to its name. The second half slows to a doom-like crawl, creating an eerie atmosphere. The playful, Fallout-esque sound clip at the end was a brilliant touch that left me both amused and unsettled.
The production quality on Accabadora is stellar. Every element, from the guttural vocals to the intricate guitar work, is crystal clear and packs a punch. The mix of modern influences with traditional grindcore elements shows the band’s ability to evolve while staying true to their roots.
The lyrics on this EP dive deep into heavy themes like betrayal, rage, and existential dread. What I love is how the band balances these dark themes with moments of humor and playfulness. It’s a mature yet irreverent approach that makes the listening experience even more enjoyable.
Accabadora is a bold and exciting release from Poolside At The Flamingo. It’s short but powerful, showcasing their growth as musicians and their knack for blending brutal intensity with genre-defying soundscapes. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the band, this EP is sure to leave a lasting impression.
