Allie X’s latest album, Girl with No Face, released on February 23, 2024, stands out for its unique blend of pop sensibilities with a deeply personal narrative and experimental edge. The album spans 11 tracks, where Allie X, also known as Alexandra Hughes, explores themes of identity, mystery, and resilience through her music.

The album’s single “Galina” showcases Hughes’s ability to maintain an aura of mystery, encapsulating the album’s thematic essence. The title track, “Girl with No Face,” delves into the perspective of a ghost seeking vengeance for dead artists, highlighting the toxic nature of the industry. This theme of avenging and channeling voices from the past is a recurring motif throughout the album, offering a blend of personal reflection and broader social commentary.

Musically, Girl with No Face is a rich tapestry of synth-pop influences, with tracks like “Truly Dreams” and “Black Eye” nodding to icons like Kate Bush and early Madonna, respectively. The album also ventures into electro-pop and ’80s new wave territories, with tracks like “Saddest Smile” and “Hardware/Software” showcasing Hughes’s versatility as an artist. Her classical training shines through in her vocal performances, adding depth and emotion to the electronic backdrop.

What sets this album apart is Hughes’s autonomy over the creative process, as she takes on the roles of writer and producer for almost every song. This creative control has imbued the album with a sense of personal authenticity and artistic maturity, marking a significant evolution from her previous works. Tracks like “Staying Power” encapsulate this newfound strength and confidence, with Hughes declaring her resilience in the face of adversity.

Girl with No Face is not just an album but an artistic statement from Allie X, blending pop sensibilities with experimental sounds and profound themes. It is a testament to Hughes’s growth as an artist and her ability to voice the voiceless through her music.
